A tour around the Boomf factory
First impressions, second impressions, and more...
Boomf is big! Deceptively big. But that’s not what is impressive about it.
From the outside, the building is a plain brick affair with some parking space to the front, and even the reception and visible office space don’t give you much of an idea of what is lurking behind the façade.
It is only once you are past the entrance and into the heart of the premises, that you begin to understand the size of the operation and what it stands for.
The premises is around 25,000 sq. ft, spread over 3 floors. A part of the ground floor is reserved for cages of orders ready for despatch – up to 100 cages a day at the height of the busiest times. That’s 100 cages filled with cards, gifts, and more, all designed to do one thing – make someone’s day extra special.
It’s a great feeling knowing you are standing, completely surrounded by products, whose sole purpose is to make someone happy.
Bear in mind that each cage can hold around 400 cards or gifts ready to send – so that’s an awful lot of happiness that rolls out of the premises - every day. (We will leave you to do the maths on that one).
And it’s not just cards. Aside from ‘normal’ greetings cards, Boomf is the #1 name that comes to mind for exploding confetti Bomb Cards, Flutter Cards, Wild Cards, Cannon Cards, Ta-Dah Cards, custom-printed Marshmallows (you really need to try those), flowers, gifts and much, much more.
Boomf is a veritable joy factory!
But that’s not even the best part of the story.
Heading upstairs to see where the cards and orders are assembled, you are struck by a view of something quite unexpected – lots of people.
Think of a card factory and you probably think of those old film reels of newspaper printing; huge clanking machines filled with rolls of paper, churning out thousands of newspapers per hour.
Boomf is different – yes, the cards are printed (of course), but the confetti bombs, the pop-up cards, the flutter cards, and so on – these are all assembled by hand, by people who care.
The space here is needed, not for miles of machinery, but so that there is enough room for the hand-made dedication that is needed for every single Boomf order.
Boomf is not a factory, it’s a family of dedicated people who care that your mum’s birthday card pops exactly as it should do when she opens the envelope. Every Boomf Bomb (photo cube card) is carefully put together by hand - and tested - before it ever sees its envelope.
This means that each photobomb is individually checked for quality. By hand. If anything is not right (if it doesn’t pop high enough, for example), it is remade.
The Boomf staff – or should we say BoomFamily – care about their customers and their customer experience.
The top floor of the premises has over 100 tables, all dedicated to the hand-assembly of orders for people like us, so that we can send a message to our loved ones to let them know that we are thinking of them.
At peaks, this means that the BoomFamily can turn out around 20,000 Boomf Bombs per day, which they did last year. All by hand, all individually checked, and all perfect.
Perhaps contrary to appearances, you soon realise, that Boomf is not in the card and gift business at all; it is in the make-people-happy business.
And that’s before we get onto the marshmallows which are oh-so-amazing! You have to try them to discover the melt-in-the-mouth taste. Brilliant marshmallows, you’ve never tried one quite like it.
Because remember, these marshmallows are personalised. Printed with your favourite photo or message, they make a unique gift that’s sure to raise a smile even before they are eaten.
Like the cards, the marshmallows are made with love, not by a huge machine rolling out thousands in one go, but individually cut and printed with care, quality control, and attention to detail.
So surprisingly, perhaps, considering the scale of the operation, the one word you come away from when you visit Boomf is family.
